Hi all. I was hoping to relax in a bathtub with a laptop on my knees and at the end of the day to write some fun trivia about the trip. Guess what, only one hotel provided free internet and only in the lobby. A little apartment we rented in Arco, Italy had free internet, however it only had a shower - so here are some notes post factum.
German people are very organized - they have rules. In fact, they have rules on how to obey the rules. You buy a ticket (it's already validated or you can use a validation machine) and walk down the stairs and onto the train. There are no metal "push-through" things to walk through to get on the subway - so one could walk off the street into the subway sans ticket. While we were on a subway, the ticket validation gestapo showed up - made up of two overweight dudes in grunge t-shirts. Each had a little wallet size badge showing that they were "ticket cops". You'd think they'd catch at least one or two cheaters who rode the subway, but did not pay (this was during rush hour). In Russia, these guys (we call them rabbits - зайцы) would run for the end of the train hoping to jump off at the next station before they are caught. No such luck, the 40 euro fine makes "the rabbits" risk averse.
